JTC Running Fall 2011 Half Marathon

Training Class

Beginning Date: Tuesday, August 30, 2011, 6:30 PM

Target Run: Subaru Distance Classic 1/2 Marathon


Training Class Description

The Fall 2011 Half Marathon Class is a 12-week program preparing individuals to participate in a half marathon this Fall. Class start date is August 30, 2011 (6:30 PM 1st Place Sports, Baymeadows Store) The class can serve as a stepping stone for those planning to complete a marathon in December or January of next year. The target half marathon is the Subaru Distance Classic Half Marathon on Thanksgiving Day scheduled for November 24th, 2011. If not planning to be in town for Thanksgiving (or due to other commitments that day), a good alternate half marathon would be the Jacksonville Bank Half Marathon on December 18, 2011.


Your Running Level

Most of the participants will progress towards completing the entire half marathon running, but others may prefer a walk/run combination to complete the race. It is recommended that you be running/walking two to three weeks preceding the class start date. The program will accommodate all levels of runners, so everyone is encouraged to participate in the training classes. Groups will be formed to accommodate most levels, and training will be tailored to reach your specific goal.


Group Runs

The program will consist of group runs two times per week throughout most of the training schedule (minimum of once per week). Be prepared to train 4-5 times per week for a significant benefit. Group runs will be held Tuesday evenings, meeting at 6:30 PM to depart for a training run at 6:45 – 7:00 PM (normally downtown in the Riverside or San Marco areas). We will meet either Saturday or Sunday at approximately 8:00 AM for a group run in varying locations throughout the Jacksonville area: Downtown, Ortega, Orange Park, San Marco, Fleming Island and Jacksonville Beach. Being present at any particular training event or day is not a requirement to benefit from the class.

Training Class Coach

The class is conducted by John Metzgar who has led numerous classes preparing participants for distances from the 5K (3.1miles) to the Half Marathon (13.1 miles). He is an experienced runner of more than 25 years and is one of the area’s top runners. In addition to John, there will be other JTC Running members utilized as group leaders that will assist in providing pacing, instruction and encouragement.


Registration Information

You can register at any 1st Place Sports location or you may also sign up online for a small additional fee. John will also accept registration forms and payments at group runs. As part of the program, you will receive a JTC Running Membership (for non-members). If registered on or prior to August 30, 2011 a Training Group performance top will be provided prior to class completion.

The Registration Fee is $65 (or $50 for current JTC Running members) for those registering prior to August 23, 2011. Fee will increase to $75 ($60 JTC members) on August 24, 2011. Make checks payable to: JTC Running and mail to: 3931 Baymeadows Road, Jacksonville, FL 32217.
